Overview
The End-of-Life Nursing Education Consortium (ELNEC) project is designed to improve primary palliative care skills. This one-day virtual event will provide an introduction to palliative care nursing as well as a detailed training in communication, pain management, symptom management, and assessment and care for patients in the final hours of life.


Objectives
 
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be better able to:

 


  1. Prescribe pain medication utilizing WHO ladder and inclusive of adjuvants to minimize opioid use and opioid induced constipation.
  2. Prescribe medications and non-pharmacologic treatments to minimize symptoms associated with serious illness such as dyspnea, anxiety, depression, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation and fatigue.
  3. Establish a strategy for facilitating a family meeting that not only supports the patient and family’s values but also produces outcomes that are consistent with what is medically appropriate while mitigating patient suffering as much as possible.
  4. Be able to communicate bad news in a way that assists patients and families make complex medical decisions.
  5. Manage and communicate the physical, emotional and spiritual aspects commonly present during the final hours of life.

Accreditation and Credit Designation

In support of improving patient care, Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), to provide continuing education for the healthcare team. 

NURSES

This activity is awarded 7 contact hours (60 minute CH). Nurses should only claim those contact hours actually spent participating in the activity.

Method of Participation

In order to meet the learning objectives and receive continuing education credit, participants are required to check in at the registration desk, attend the program, and complete the online evaluation form at the conclusion of the activity. A letter certifying attendance and credit certification will be emailed to participants upon completion of the online evaluation survey.
