16th Annual Innovations and Trends in Cardiovascular Care Symposium

It has been well established that cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the number one killer of individuals in the United States. Despite maximal efforts in prevention and treatment, this number continues to grow year after year. As a consequence, we are treating more and more heart failure (often the end result of chronic CVD) with optimal medical therapy as well as devices to support the failing heart, with as many as 670,000 new cases being diagnosed each and every year. Despite our ever-evolving research and technology into the treatment of this ever-growing patient population, the mortality rate remains high with 50% of patients diagnosed with heart failure dying within 5 years of diagnosis.

Treatment for all patients with cardiovascular disease is becoming more and more complex with emerging technologies treating a sicker and more complex patient population. As these treatment strategies continue to change with advancing research and technology, we need to involve multiple specialties employing a true multidisciplinary approach to treating these patients often with end stage disease and resultant heart failure.

The goal of this symposium is to expose cardiovascular healthcare practitioners to the multitude of disease entities encompassing cardiovascular diseases and demonstrate current and novel treatments elucidated through case presentations and panel discussions.

Target Audience
This activity is designed for cardiologists, cardiothoracic surgeons, internists, residents, fellows, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, cardiac nurses, cardiovascular technologists, cardiovascular program administrators, and researchers..

1. Synthesize the current data and treatment algorithms for patients with cardiogenic shock
2. Recognize the limitations of symptoms, stress testing, and angiography in patients with chronic kidney disease
3. Utilize the findings of the CABANA trial to develop individualized treatment strategies for patients with atrial fibrillation
4. Review the interaction between cancer therapy and cardiac disease
5. Summarize two strategies in both the pre-hospital and inpatient settings for increasing long-term survival with favorable neurological outcome for out-of-hospital cardiac arrest victims
6. Discuss recent developments in the transcatheter treatment of valvular heart disease
7. Identify the challenges associated with endovascular abdominal aortic aneurysm repair with a fenestrated graft
8. Describe the benefits of the multidisciplinary approach in the diagnosis and the treatment of coronary perforations in the Cath Lab

Successful completion of this CME activity, which includes participation in the evaluation component, enables the participant to earn up to 4.75 MOC points in the American Board of Internal Medicine's (ABIM) Maintenance of Certification (MOC) program. Participants will earn MOC points equivalent to the amount of CME credits claimed for the activity. It is the CME activity provider's responsibility to submit participant completion information to ACCME for the purpose of granting ABIM MOC credit.

Method of Participation
In order to meet the learning objectives and receive continuing education credits, participants are expected to check in at the registration desk, attend the program and complete an online evaluation form at the conclusion of the activity.
