Overview

This activity will utilize case presentations, audience interaction and an experienced faculty panel to discuss controversies and state-of-the-art management of complex injuries of the shoulder, knee and ankle. Many injuries may initially appear innocuous or amenable to non-operative management but surgical treatment may lead to better patient outcomes and reduced complications. Incorrectly diagnosed injuries and inadequate initial treatment may lead to joint stiffness, arthritis and loss of function. The focus of the discussion will be to provide an overview of current, state-of-the-art management, and practical and innovative clinical pearls, related to the diagnosis and management of complex shoulder, knee and ankle injuries.

This activity will focus on reviewing the state-of-the-art techniques for the diagnosis and management of these commonly encountered orthopaedic injuries. Identification of intraoperative pitfalls and tips to maximize patient outcomes will be emphasized. Lectures and discussions will be evidence-based and focused on case-based examples and problem-directed learning.

In addition, Dr. Jack Wilber will present a special keynote lecture discussing the evolution of the orthopaedic trauma surgeon in North America.

About Fred F. Behrens, MD

Fred F. Behrens, MD was a pivotal, renowned and beloved figure in orthopaedics. He was internationally known for his work treating orthopaedic injuries associated with fractures. He was a pioneer in the science, technique and education of external fixation, and in education emphasizing important principles in external fixation biomechanics and pin placement. He was well known and referenced for his pivotal work on anatomical cross-section safe corridors and the basic mechanical factors of external fixation pins, frames and configuration.

It is noteworthy that Dr. Behrens was one of the only orthopaedic surgeons of his era to be awarded an NIH grant for research on external fixation.

Aside from his legacy in orthopaedic education, Dr. Behrens was known for his compassion, humanism, and dedication to provide orthopaedic care in an underserved, urban environment. Dr. Behrens was a great man who left a great legacy to all who knew him. Those of us who were fortunate to have worked and studied beside him benefited from our experiences with him.

This educational event has been established to memorialize this love of education, humanism, and compassion.
