Overview

Jointly provided by Rutgers School of Nursing, François Xavier Bagnoud (FXB) Center, Jefferson Health New Jersey - Infectious Diseases, Rowan University School of Osteopathic Medicine, and Rutgers School of Social Work

Course Overview
The annual HIV Medical Update Conference is New Jersey’s oldest annual HIV conference. The history of the HIV Medical Update Conference dates back to 1989 when little was known about treatment and prevention of HIV/AIDS. The needs of the conference have evolved over the last thirty years. HIV is now a modern chronic infection that, if medication is adhered to, infected individuals can now live almost as long as uninfected individuals. This year’s conference will target primary care providers along with infectious disease specialists since primary care providers are increasingly involved in caring for people with HIV/AIDS. The conference will focus on the opioid crisis and treatment of the substance user, current ARVs and the development of future medication, transitioning between PEP and PrEP, and aging with HIV.

Target Audience
This activity is designed for physicians, advanced practice nurses, nurses, pharmacists, physician assistants and social workers.

Target Audience
Professions - Nurse Practitioner, Pharmacist, Physician, Registered Nurse, Social Worker

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be better able to:

  1. Discuss clinical support services and stigma challenges of persons aging with HIV
  2. Describe the impact of Opioid Use Disorder on people living with HIV and strategies for follow-up care after a non-fatal overdose
  3. Examine the practicality of transitioning a patient from PEP to PrEP through evidence-based case studies
  4. Review current treatment and prevention guidelines for HIV and discuss the progress for cure and prevention methods in the research timeline
  5. Identify specific issues primary care clinicians may face in treating a patient with HIV including HIV-related health conditions, resources for ARV knowledge and developing teams to enhance patient care and outcomes
