Ad Astra Per Aspera

I’m delighted to invite you to the Global Neurosurgical Update and Educational Summit. This curriculum is intended to educate, innovate and update students, residents and attendings regarding developments in neurosurgery. A galaxy of international superstars will be joining us.

In conjunction with the World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies, the Department of Neurosurgery at Rutgers - Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and New Jersey Medical School, as well as RWJBarnabas Health, will be sponsoring this event.

The second Peter W. Carmel oration will be delivered by the President of Rutgers University, Dr. Jonathan Holloway, who will speak about structural racism and medicine. The inaugural David and Lya Neumann oration will be delivered by David M. Oshinsky, Pulitzer Prize winning author of Polio: An American Story and Bellevue.

The meeting will also feature a series of lectures on how to mentor and train the next generation of technical neurosurgeons to be delivered by Dr. Majid Samii and Dr. Robert Spetzler, two of our finest technical virtuosos. We will also have updates from across the globe, along with talks on leadership by Dr. Karin Muraszko, neurotrauma by Dr. Franco Servadei, and global neurosurgery by Dr. Nelson Oyesiku and Dr. Gail Rosseau. The summit will dedicate a session on resident and medical student participation. A global call for abstracts has gone out, and a series of prizes will be awarded for the best student and resident paper.

We hope you can join us for this academic event. Thank you again and we look forward to your energetic participation.

“Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire.”

-William Butler Yeats

Sincerely

Anil Nanda, MD, MPH, FACS
Professor and Chairman, Department of Neurosurgery

Symposium Goals and Objectives
• To create a platform for societies from the developing countries to discuss the current development of neurosurgery in their respective countries, especially related to the education of young neurosurgeons.
• To create an opportunity for all representatives of members’ countries to present regarding neurosurgical services in their respective countries.
• To understand the facilities and level of development in neurosurgery of each members’ countries.
• To create a database on the regional neurosurgical services used to formulate long term strategies to improvise the neurosurgical development in human resources, facilities, and adaptation of current modern technologies.
• To understand the regional health policies and its implications on the delivery of care in neurosurgery.
• To understand the challenges posed due to cultural differences in implementing a uniform standard of care globally.
