Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity the learner will be able to: 


  1. Distinguish three major components of the The Invitation to Change Approach: Helping with Understanding; Helping with Self-Awareness; Helping with Actions.
  2. Discover the evidence-based protocols (ACT, CRAFT, MI) that also include the concepts and skills found in the Invitation to Change Approach.
  3. Explain the role of reinforcement in understanding substance use behavior and how this perspective can be useful to families and in clinical practice.
  4. Describe the utility of allowing for a wider range of potential approaches for helping individuals make changes in their substance use.
  5. Identify ambivalence and place it in the bigger context of behavior change (i.e.) as a natural part of the change process that is not necessarily a sign of giving up or not caring.
  6. Analyze multiple benefits to and strategies for developing self-awareness, including checking in with oneself through “pausing” and noticing emotional barriers to acting in line with values.
  7. Identify multiple strategies for their own self-care and for helping clients/their families develop self-compassion.
  8. Apply specific examples and worksheets to convey the ITC skills in their clinical practice.

Activity is a virtual event, to be held live, via Rutgers HIPAA compliant Zoom. 

Activity consists of four, 4-hour sessions, for a total time commitment of 16 hours. Participation commitment is required for all sessions.
