Overview

Presented by Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences in collaboration with Horizon

Implicit bias refers to the unconscious attitudes, thoughts, or feelings, which may be contradictory and inconsistent with an individual’s conscious beliefs. Despite the unconscious nature of implicit bias, there is evidence that it affects healthcare and workplace outcomes. “Othering” is a process of differentiation and demarcation, by which individuals or groups draw a line between ’us’ and ’them’ – and through which social distance is established and maintained. This process often acts as a barrier to creating a sense of belonging within work and learning environments. This two-hour workshop defines, explores, and helps participants understand implicit bias.

Target Audience
Professions - Nurse Practitioner, Pharmacist, Physician, Physician Assistant, Psychologist, Registered Nurse, Social Worker

Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be better able to:

  1. Discuss the psychology of change and what you can do to mitigate bias and structural inequity
  2. Engage in reflection about your own beliefs and values and the need to address personal bias
  3. Describe the science behind unconscious bias
  4. Identify the mechanisms that lead to othering
  5. Explore individual-based strategies to mitigate bias
