Overview

This course is designed to enhance the professional development of new registered professional nurses that are, or will be, transitioning into practice. The course will provide information on the Stages of Transition and Reality Shock Module, Time Management, Strategies for Success, Evidence-Based Practice, Teamwork and Collaboration, Professionalism-Early Career Development, Feedback and Conflict Resolution, Quality Improvement, and Delegation.

Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be better able to:


  1. Describe the characteristics, benefits, and challenges of nurse residency programs.
  2. Determine how to work with a preceptor to identify professional learning needs for a successful transition to practice.
  3. Develop a plan for use during the program to ensure a successful transition to practice as a new registered nurse.
  4. Identify conflicts that may impact you as a new nurse.
  5. Determine characteristics of the four phases of reality shock.
  6. Assess the five levels of competency you may achieve.
  7. Analyze personal patterns that can either help or diminish your productivity as a nurse.
  8. Identify time management best practices to increase productivity.
  9. Apply time management skills for use in your individual practice.
  10. Describe the importance of grit and resiliency in developing and sustaining a career in nursing.
  11. Demonstrate the utilization of current, research evidence when deciding to modify clinical practice.
  12. Identify the characteristics of an effectively functioning team.
  13. Explore options for the next stage of your career development.
  14. Explain the purpose and principles of feedback.
  15. Identify opportunities for Quality Improvement in your work setting.
  16. Explain key components of delegation and their benefits.

In support of improving patient care, Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.
