Overview
There have been a number of recent enforcement actions by the Office of Civil Rights and other state/federal agencies with respect to privacy laws, leading to potential liability for healthcare providers.  Additionally, new technologies and the increase of cyber theft has increased the need for awareness by the pharmacy community on how to safely handle and store protected health information (PHI).  This program aims to inform the pharmacy practitioner on changes to HIPAA enforcement to better inform risk mitigation and adherence to privacy laws in pharmacy.

  1. List federal HIPAA compliance audit elements.
  2. Recognize recent changes to HIPAA enforcement.
  3. Describe strategies for pharmacists and healthcare institutions to handle privacy complaints.
  4. Identify key actions to mitigate cybersecurity threats.
