Overview

Join the Traumatic Loss Coalitions for Youth and affiliates as we discuss the complexity of sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression in working with Sexual and Gender Minority Youth. This session will discuss social and cultural variables, mental health, trauma, and substance abuse. Risk behaviors and protective factors will be reviewed.

Target Audience: Supporters and advocates for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer Youth

Keynote Speaker:

Philip T. McCabe CSW, CAS, CDVC, DRCC is a Health Education Specialist for Rutgers School of Public Health, Center for Public Health Workforce Development, and an adjunct instructor at the Rutgers School of Nursing. Phil is a Certified Social Worker, a Nationally Certified Addiction Specialist in the areas of Compulsive Gambling, Sexual Addiction, Alcoholism, Tobacco, and Other Drugs, a Certified Domestic Violence Counselor, a Disaster Response Crisis Counselor, and a board-certified Sexologist from The American Board of Sexology. He directs the LGBTQIA+ Violence Prevention and Community Engagement Initiative supported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Rape Prevention and Education (RPE) grant funds, administered by the NJ Department of Children and Families, Division on Women.


Objectives
  Upon completion of this activity, participants should be better able to:

 


  1. Distinguish the differences between sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression and related terminology.
  2. Recognize the intersectionality of race, ethnicity, gender, age, class, and other subcultures within the LGBTQIA+ Communities.
  3. Identify risk and protective factors related with violence prevention.
  4. Identify steps the agency can take to create s Safe Space that is affirmative for LGBTQIA+ individuals.

Accreditation and Credit Designation

In support of improving patient care, Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.

 

 

 Social Workers (The New Jersey Board of Social Work Examiners):  This program is approved for social work continuing education hours by Rutgers University Behavioral Health Care in accordance with New Jersey administrative code 13:44G-6.4 and recognized by The New Jersey Board of Social Work Examiners.  This program is approved for 2.0 clinical or cultural competency continuing education hours.
