Overview
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has estimated in a report that up to 450,000 individuals may have been affected by Alpha-gal Syndrome (AGS) since 2010.  The prevalence of AGS is expected to rise as the public becomes increasingly aware of this condition.  However, a survey study conducted by Carpenter et al. (2023) found that less than half of healthcare professionals in the United States have knowledge of AGS with a smaller percentage reporting lack of confidence in diagnosing or managing AGS.  Considering the lack of healthcare professional awareness, affected individuals with AGS face limited resources and may not receive adequate care in managing their condition.  The purpose of this continuing pharmacy education activity is to increase pharmacist knowledge and awareness of AGS by reviewing etiology, patient presentation, diagnosis methods, treatment, and its relevance to medications.

Target Audience
Specialties - General Pharmacy
Professions - Pharmacist

Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be better able to:

  1. Define Alpha-gal Syndrome (AGS) and understand the etiology of AGS.
  2. Describe the symptoms of AGS, methods of dianosis, and treatment.
  3. Identify ingredients in medications that may ellicit an allergic response in patients with AGS.

Registration

REGISTRATION CLOSES MORNING OF APRIL 19TH;  DO NOT DELAY IN REGISTERING!  You will receive the virtual Zoom link the Friday before (on April 19th) via the email you used to register for this CE activity.
