Overview
The purpose of this activity is to review the 2024 American Diabetes Association Hyperglycemic Crisis guidelines with a discussion of subcutaneous insulin as a treatment for diabetic ketoacidosis.  The activity will describe the potential impact of the 2024 Hyperglycemic crisis guideline on patient management as well as review primary literature supporting guideline recommendations.  With significant change and emphasis on utilization of subcutaneous insulin for diabetic ketoacidosis in the 2024 guidelines, focus will be placed on patient evaluation / selection for subcutaneous insulin therapy and considerations for practice.  Currently, subcutaneous insulin is underutilized for diabetic ketoacidosis in practice.  Patients are not routinely stratified by severity of diabetic ketoacidosis, and as such are often treated with IV insulin, resulting in an increased amount of ICU admissions for mild diabetic ketoacidosis.  The goal of this activity is to provide education and literature to support a practice change towards patient-specific care for diabetic ketoacidosis.

Target Audience
Specialties - General Pharmacy
Professions - Pharmacist

Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be better able to:

  1. Recognize key changes to diabetic Ketoacidosis management outlined in the 2024 American Diabetes Association (ADA) Hyperglycemic Crises Consensus Report.
  2. Identify opportunities for improvement in the management of diabetic ketoacidosis.
  3. Describe the elements of a patient-centered treatment regimen based on diabetic ketoacidosis severity.

Registration

REGISTRATION CLOSES PROMPTLY ON NOV 3RD AT 11AM.  You must complete the evaluation AFTER this CE activity by Nov. 18th to be considered for credit.
