This activity will provide didactic, simulation, and clinical training of abortion provision, including pregnancy options counseling, pre-abortion assessment and pregnancy dating, early pregnancy loss diagnosis, and pregnancy of unknown location management. Additionally, training will cover medication abortion provision, aspiration abortion provision, management of complications, and abortion follow-up care. The target audience will include advanced practice clinicians (nurse practitioners, physician assistants, certified nurse-midwives, and certified midwives) who could implement these skills in their clinical settings.

Course Highlights

  • Abortion in Perspective- discuss the current state of abortion access in the US and the APP role as clinician and advocate.

  • Health Equity- apply a reproductive justice framework to abortion care provision.

  • Clinical Competency- gain the necessary skills and competencies to practice as APP's in early abortion care.

Objectives
Learners are expected to achieve:

  1. Describe the current state of abortion trends in the United States, the role as clinician and advocate, and professional standards of a nurse-midwife or advanced practice nurse in first trimester abortion care.
  2. Apply a person-centered approach to care with an emphasis on reproductive autonomy and informed choice.
  3. Compile and interpret appropriate historical, physical exam, and lab information as needed to safely perform medication and uterine aspiration abortion
  4. Provide comprehensive first trimester abortion care including a focused health assessment, identification of risk factors, development, implementation and evaluation of a plan of care and follow-up as needed including consultation, collaboration, or referral.

  • General Registration - $1,600.00

  • All applicants will be considered for scholarships.

Asynchronous didactic content, 3 in-person labs on Wednesdays (5/28/25, 7/2/25, 8/6/25), and a (50 hour) clinical practicum to complete after the didactic content.
