Overview

This module focuses on key issues of policy and systemic challenges faced in the care of individuals with disabilities, especially those with intellectual disability, autism and complex behavioral and medical challenges. It examines disparities in healthcare access and outcomes, the effects of systemic barriers, and the role of policies and practices in addressing these inequalities. Additionally, the module offers practical strategies for healthcare professionals to advocate for and implement equitable care practices within the healthcare field.

Objectives

 Upon completion of this activity, learners should be better able to:

 


  1. Identify health disparities and barriers to care for people with disabilities, especially people with intellectual disability, autism, and co-occurring behavioral and medical conditions.
  2. Identify local, state and federal legislators and their roles in policy-making who will be targets for advocacy and policy change.
  3. Summarize the tools and strategies for a successful legislative advocacy effort.
  4. Distinguish between government branches and their roles, and legislation and regulation, in order to be able to conduct successful advocacy plans

Physicians: Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences designates this enduring material for a maximum of 1.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™.  Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Nurses: This activity is awarded 1.0 ANCC contact hours. (60 minute CH).

Social Workers (The New Jersey Board of Social Work Examiners):  This program is approved for social work continuing education hours by Rutgers University Behavioral Health Care in accordance with New Jersey administrative code 13:44G-6.4 and recognized by The New Jersey Board of Social Work Examiners.  This program is approved for 1.0 clinical continuing education hours.

Psychologists
: Rutgers University Behavioral Health Care and RBHS is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. Rutgers University Behavioral Health Care and RBHS maintain responsibility for the program and its content. (1.0 CE Credits). 

Professional Counselors: Each course will count for 1.0 recertification credits towards Certified Recovery Support Practitioner as approved by the Certification Board of NJ, Inc. 

Marriage and Family Therapists: This course will count for 1.0 recertification credits for Marriage and Family Therapists as approved by The Certification Board of NJ, Inc.
