Overview

Portal hypertension is a major clinical consequence of chronic liver disease and cirrhosis, associated with substantial morbidity, mortality, and healthcare utilization. Complications such as variceal hemorrhage, refractory ascites, hepatic encephalopathy, hepatorenal syndrome, and spontaneous bacterial peritonitis account for frequent hospitalizations and remain leading causes of death in patients with cirrhosis. Despite the availability of evidence-based guidelines from professional societies, significant variation persists in the recognition, risk stratification, and multidisciplinary management of portal hypertension across care settings and specialties.

Rapid advances in noninvasive diagnostics, medical therapy, endoscopic interventions, transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS) techniques, and surgical options have changed the clinical landscape, creating meaningful educational gaps among healthcare providers involved in both early-stage disease identification and the management of acute, life-threatening complications.

This activity will address these gaps by delivering evidence-based and multidisciplinary education by emphasizing early diagnosis, prevention of decompensation, optimized acute management, and coordinated longitudinal care, aligning directly with current guideline recommendations and patient safety priorities.

Target Audience
This activity is designed for physicians and advanced practice providers involved in the care of patients with cirrhosis and portal hypertension, including specialists in hepatology, gastroenterology, interventional radiology, and transplant/hepatobiliary surgery. The program will also be of interest to clinicians in critical care, hospital medicine, emergency medicine, and anesthesiology who participate in the acute and peri-procedural management of portal hypertensive complications such as variceal bleeding, refractory ascites, and shunt or TIPS procedures.

Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be better able to:

  1. Describe the current pathophysiologic mechanisms underlying portal hypertension and their implications for disease progression
  2. Apply noninvasive diagnostic tools and guideline-based algorithms to identify clinically significant portal hypertension
  3. Differentiate evidence-based medical and endoscopic management strategies for preventing and treating variceal and non-variceal complications.
  4. Evaluate indications, techniques, and outcomes associated with TIPS, complex shunt creation, and embolization procedures
  5. Integrate surgical and transplant considerations into longitudinal management plans for patients with advanced portal hypertension
  6. Collaborate effectively within multidisciplinary teams to optimize acute and chronic care delivery for patients with portal hypertension
