Overview

This session provides a comprehensive overview of key strategies and emerging developments in efforts to end the HIV epidemic in New Jersey. The program will begin with a brief review of the state’s current epidemiology and progress in reducing new infections. Participants will then explore foundational HIV screening, prevention and care modalities, including PrEP, PEP, and the principles of Rapid Start ART along with essential approaches for primary care management of HIV. The session will conclude by highlighting actionable steps that clinicians can collectively take, as well as promising innovations on the horizon in HIV prevention and care.

ANCC Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be better able to:

  1. Describe key trends in the epidemiology of HIV in New Jersey, including populations most impacted and current statewide progress in reducing new infections.
  2. Identify recommended HIV testing strategies and core prevention modalities such as PrEP and PEP.
  3. Explain the principles of Rapid Start ART and outline effective referral and linkage-to-care pathways for newly diagnosed individuals or those re-engaging in care.
  4. Apply best practices to enhance early diagnosis, prevention uptake, and timely treatment initiation in order to support the broader goals of the Ending the HIV Epidemic initiative.
