Overview

A three-day course, 24 contact hours.

The purpose of this three-day intensive course is to enhance the health/physical assessment skills of nurses who function in hospitals, long-term care facilities, schools, community health, and industrial settings.  An organized and systematic approach to health assessment will enable participants to utilize interviewing techniques to obtain and record a comprehensive health history and apply clinical skills. Participants will develop competence in identifying, describing, and recording normal findings.

This course meets the requirements for entry into the Rutgers School of Nursing graduate nursing programs and may be submitted for review by other nursing graduate programs. Please check with your school for acceptance requirements. Some schools require a practicum and/or final examination.

Objectives
 
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be better able to:

 


  1. List the key structures and functions of the skin.
  2. Describe the skin changes throughout the life span.
  3. Identify causative factors contributing to pressure ulcer occurence.
  4. Accurately identify each stage of pressure ulcer development.
  5. Identify risk factors leading to the development of pressure ulcers.
  6. Outline characteristics of a validated and reliable pressure ulcer risk assessment tool.
  7. Complete thorough skin and pain assessments.
  8. Outline an individualized program of skin care, including nutritional support, documentation, and patient education.

  • $595 - Rutgers School of Nursing Faculty, Students, Preceptors, and Alumni (includes Legacy UMDNJ School of Nursing and Legacy Rutgers College of Nursing)
  • Practicum/Final Exam can be arranged for an additional fee of $100
    • Practicum/Final Exam includes:
      • 40 question written exam
      • 30 minute practicum evaluation
  • There is no refund available for the practicum exam.

Method of Participation

In order to meet the learning objectives and receive continuing education credit, participants are required to check in at registration, attend the program, and complete the online evaluation form at the conclusion of the activity. A letter certifying attendance and credit certification will be emailed to participants upon completion of the online evaluation survey.
