Overview

This is a 2-Days Course:

  • 1st Class: Thursday, March 23, 2023
  • 2nd Class: Friday, March 24, 2023

This course is designed to enhance assessment skills of the practitioner who works with all types of adult critically-ill patients through analysis of a variety of challenging 12-Lead ECGs and case studies. With the numerous advances in the diagnosis and management of patients with ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) and other related cardiac disorders, quick rhythm recognition on the 12-Lead ECG is essential for appropriate intervention.

This is NOT a basic cardiac monitoring class. A basic cardiac monitoring class is a strongly recommended prerequisite.

 Course Content includes:

  • Electrode application
  • Understanding the 12 lead printout
  • Vectors
  • Axis & fascicular blocks
  • Bundle branch blocks
  • Patterns of infarctions
  • Localizing infarction
  • 15 lead ECG
  • Chamber enlargement
  • Tachycardias
  • Identifying high risk patients
  • Putting it all together

Target Audience
Specialties - General Nursing

Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be better able to:

  1. Describe the derivation of the standard 12 ECG leads, including electrode placement and polarity and views of the heart.
  2. Critically analyze PQRST complexes for any abnormalities of interval lengths, slurring, depression, elevation, inversion, notching and intrinsic deflection.
  3. Define electrical axis, determine mean electrical axis, and state the common causes of axis deviation (LAD, RAD, IAD).
  4. Describe ECG features of: ischemia, injury, infarction; chamber enlargement, bundle branch blocks, hemi blocks, pericarditis, and electrolyte and drug effects.
  5. Interpret 5 (five) 12-Lead ECGs and identify the pathological condition causing the abnormality.
