Overview

The connection between dental and general health is not generally appreciated in either medical or dental practice. This activity is intended to facilitate communication and collaboration between medical and dental professionals who can be viewed as healers observing disparate and superficially unrelated aspects of disease that affect many parts of the body.

This activity will provide an example of a dialog between a physician and a dentist in discussing the needs of patients experiencing both medical and dental disease. The discussion will cover the contribution of dental disease to the etiology of common medical pathologies and systemic factors in dental health. Learners will be introduced to the epidemiological studies linking dental and systemic disease and interventional studies indicating the benefits of joint medical and dental treatments.

Target Audience
Professions - Dentist, Nurse Practitioner, Physician, Physician Assistant

Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be better able to:

  1. Recognize presentations of dental infections that may jeopardize health
  2. Review team-based communication between providers and patients regarding oral health
  3. Recognize the need for interprofessional patient referral

Registration is complimentary, but pre-registration is required.

Accreditation and Credit Designation

In support of improving patient care, Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.

Physicians: Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences designates this live activity for a maximum of 1 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Dentists: The Rutgers School of Dental Medicine (RSDM) is an approved course sponsor by the New Jersey Board of Dentistry. Our courses, which deal with the scientific or clinical practice of dentistry, professional responsibilities, or ethical obligations of the profession, fulfill Board requirements for dentists’ license renewal. Credit hours are granted on an hour for-hour basis, provided the course is completed as designed.

RSDM is an ADA CERP Recognized Provider; the current term of acceptance extends to 6/2025. ADA CERP is a service of the American Dental Association to assist dental professionals in identifying quality providers of continuing dental education. ADA CERP does not approve or endorse individual courses or instructors, nor does it imply acceptance of credit hours by boards of dentistry. Concerns or complaints about a CE provider may be directed to the CE provider or to ADA CERP at www.ada.org/cerp. Rutgers is also an Academy of General Dentistry, approved national sponsor for FAGD/MAGD credit.

Method of Participation
In order to meet the learning objectives and receive continuing education credit, learners are expected to register for and participate in the activity, and complete an online evaluation at the conclusion of the activity.  A CE certificate will be emailed to participants once the evaluation closes, which will be 3-4 weeks following the activity.

The relevant financial relationships of all individuals who affect the content of continuing education activities and any discussion of off-label/investigational uses will be disclosed to the audience at the time of the activity.

Additional Information
Please direct any questions regarding this activity to [email protected].
