Overview

A nursing license renewal requirement, this course is a 2-part opioid series. The first part, will focus on "Understanding Opioid Use Disorder and its Treatment: The Basics". The second part, will focus on "Population Health Approach to the Opioid Epidemic".

  • Understanding Opioid Use Disorder and its Treatment: The Basics will review the basics of opioid addiction and the treatment of opioid addiction. This includes a description of how opioids stimulate pleasure and euphoria, the progression from dependence to addiction, related symptoms and care options.
  • Population Health Approach to the Opioid Epidemic will review the extent of the Opioid Epidemic in the United States and New Jersey and strategies for reversing the current trends. This includes facts about the extent of opioid abuse as well as specific methods of preventing and reversing addiction.

Objectives
Upon completion of this course, participants will be better able to:

  1. Explain the reaction of opioids within the body.
  2. Describe the progression from opioid usage to addiction.
  3. List the symptoms associated with opioid addiction and related withdrawal systems.
  4. Describe the concepts and strategies involved in Medication Assisted Therapy.
  5. Explain the extent of Opioid use in the United States and New Jersey.
  6. Define the groups at greater risk of opioid addiction.
  7. List the factors contributing to the increase in opioid misuse.
  8. Describe strategies for preventing opioid addiction.
