Overview

The surge in the accessibility, affordability, and convenience of computers and mobile phones over the past 20 years has altered the way in which we communicate with each other. Chats, tweets, texts, and e-mails have become part of life on an international scale. Electronic communication has connected families, strengthened friendships, and sparked marriages. Yet for some, the reliance on electronic devices may have unintended consequences.

Some have theorized that problematic use of technology may stem from not just a desire for increased control over asynchronous interactions, but for an escape from one’s reality to live in an artificial, transiently safe environment. In each case, an understanding of the social and cultural context in which problematic use occurs remains key to effective identification and treatment.

We are very excited to announce "Urban Mental Health 2019: The Technological Addictions,” the Seventh Annual Conference of Rutgers New Jersey Medical School Psychiatry. This year we are turning the focus on the problematic use of technology, which is emerging as a major problem affecting the mental health of our urban communities. A panel of experts will present updates on a wide range of technological addictions, from Internet gaming to cybersex to online shopping and “e-baying.”

Objectives
Participants will be able to:

  1. List five forms of Technological Addictions as they appear in the scientific literature of 2019.
  2. Describe the psychology and culture surrounding non-pathological use of technology.
  3. Distinguish between normal use and addiction.
  4. Discuss adverse consequences of the Technological Addictions on the mental health of vulnerable populations in urban communities.
  5. Treat Technological Addictions with evidence-based pharmacological and psychosocial interventions.
