Overview

Bias, shame, stereotype and stigma are pervasive in healthcare, with detrimental effects on the learning environment, student and faculty retention, and the health of our patients and communities. How can nursing educators learn to mitigate bias and integrate health equity into their teaching?

In this session, participants will have the opportunity to apply the bias checklist to their own educational content and ask questions regarding this approach.

Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be better able to:

  1. Explain the need for supportive communications.
  2. Describe the impact of bias in medical education and develop a common vocabulary for talking about bias in nursing and health professions education.
  3. Apply a checklist-based approach to mitigating bias and microaggressions nursing educational content.
  4. Describe key communication techniques to support learner well-being.
  5. Identify common scenarios in which supportive communication approaches can be used.
  6. Discuss strategies beyond educational content choices to make the learning environment more equitable and inclusive.
