Overview

This comprehensive, hands-on training introduces participants to the core principles and practices of phlebotomy. The course covers the role of the phlebotomist, legal and ethical responsibilities, infection control, and anatomy of veins. Learners will gain practical experience with venipuncture and capillary puncture techniques, explore essential equipment and the order of draw, and practice patient communication through role-play.


Objectives
 Upon completion of this activity, participants should be better able to:

  1. Explain the role and responsibilities of a phlebotomist, including legal and ethical considerations.
  2. Apply infection control practices and proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
  3. Identify major veins and blood vessels relevant to venipuncture and capillary puncture.
  4. Select and use phlebotomy equipment correctly, including needles, tubes, and tourniquets.
  5. Demonstrate proper venipuncture and capillary puncture techniques following the correct order of draw.
  6. Troubleshoot common phlebotomy challenges and ensure patient safety.
  7. Communicate effectively with patients to provide comfort and clarity during procedures.
  8. Complete a hands-on practice session to build confidence and competence in blood collection.
