Overview

This guide is designed to support participatory training aimed at reducing stigma within healthcare settings. Its immediate goal is to provide practical strategies and hands-on exercises that help providers recognize, address, and prevent stigma in their daily practice. Ultimately, the guide seeks to expand access to stigma-free, high-quality care, treatment, and prevention services for all individuals.

Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be better able to:

  1. Discuss pictures depicting different forms of stigma in clinics. Recognize that stigma exists, discuss why it occurs, who it is impacting and how.
  2. Identify words used to stigmatize people from groups that face stigma, how to become aware of their use and challenge it.
  3. Discuss HIV and epidemiological data, key dates and milestones in the HIV epidemic, and how these events have had an impact on stigma
  4. Identify how stigma is created, what it looks like, and the negative long-term impact it has on different aspects of life including on one’s health.
  5. Understand how stress impacts clinic staff, and how it relates to stigma, impacting both clinic staff and clients; discuss strategies to reduce stress and stigma.
  6. Hear from clients about their experiences as they receive care in other clinics (not clients of the clinics themselves to avoid conflict of interest).
  7. Create implementation and accountability mechanisms and plans for sustainability of a stigma-free setting.
