Overview

This training examines the impact of midwifery practice—a job with direct trauma exposure via the people we work with or the situations that we’re professionally called to be in—on our professional and personal identities. This is a concept known as vicarious trauma, and when it’s not addressed, it has a profound impact on us and can manifest as PTSD symptoms. This training will take you through the neurobiologically based trauma responses and how our trauma responses show up when activated. Moreover, this training considers crucial topics such as connecting to the “why” that drew you to midwifery, as well as boundaries, context changes, impact on personal relationships, moral injury, and vicarious resilience.  Addressing work-related trauma is important.

Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  1. Understand the neurobiology of the trauma response system and how that impacts a wide range of interpersonal factors and experiences.
  2. Normalize trauma response and reactions to trauma material encountered in “hard jobs” such as midwifery where people are exposed to the trauma narratives of their patients and families; directly experience trauma alongside patients; and have trauma response systems that are activated throughout professional interactions.
  3. Decrease stigma and sense of not being “tough enough” to manage one’s own trauma responses to the activation within professional interactions as a midwife.
  4. Build a tool kit to manage vicarious trauma.
