Overview

Recent advances in general artificial intelligence (AI) have created opportunities for greater efficiency and medication safety in healthcare.  However, the rapid evolution of AI technology abuts against the current legal framework governing pharmacy practice, data security, and privacy. This session aims to explore the emerging role of AI in healthcare by addressing its beneficial applications and addressing the ethical and legal considerations necessary to integrate this technology into practice.  Pharmacy team members will explore potential legal liabilities associated with AI and learn how to navigate changing practices within the current scope of patient privacy and data security laws.

Target Audience
Specialties - General Pharmacy
Professions - Pharmacist, Pharmacy Technician

Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be better able to:

  1. Discuss the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in reducing potential medication errors.
  2. Identify potential liabilities associated with the use of AI and the standard of care.
  3. Describe HIPAA-related privacy concerns with AI use.
  4. Discuss ethical and legal framework of proper AI use.
  5. Identify situations where AI-generated recommendation should be escalated to a pharmacist for clinical review.
  6. Recall patient privacy and data security practices when using AI-enabled pharmacy tools.
