Objectives

Professionals working in the fields of: Child Protective Services, Attorneys, Mental Health, Forensic Nurse Examiners, Law Enforcement, Prosecution, Victim Advocates; Partner Agencies are strongly encouraged to attend. 

At the conclusion of this activity the learner will be able to: 


  1. Define trauma in the context of domestic violence.
  2. Recognize the potential barriers that survivors of varying personal and cultural backgrounds might face when seeking protective services.
  3. Describe the purpose and process of medical evaluation in suspected sexual abuse.
  4. Identify how preconceived notions and myths impact our understanding of child sexual abuse.
  5. Apply techniques for intervening in families where domestic violence exists.
  6. Recall factors that mitigate the effects of domestic violence on children.

9:00 am – 10:30 am: The Children Are Not Okay: Impact of Domestic Violence: Presented by Jane Staub, The Zero Abuse Project

10:30 am – 10: 45 am: Break

10:45 am - 12:15 pm: Child Sexual Abuse Evaluation: Presented by Dr. DeBellis

12:15 pm - 1:00 pm: Lunch Break

1:00 pm – 2:30 pm: Domestic Violence and Lethality Assessments: Presented by Jane Straub, The Zero Abuse Project

2:30 pm - 2:45 pm: Break

2:45 pm – 4:15 pm: Child Abuse and Domestic Violence: When Systems Collide: Presented by Amy Russell

  

   


Accreditation and Credit Designation

 In support of improving patient care, this activity has been planned and implemented by New Jersey Children's Alliance and Rutgers Biomedical Health Sciences. Rutgers Biomedical Health Sciences is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.

Nurses:  This activity is awarded 6.0 contact hours (60 min CH). 

Physicians:  Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences designates this live activity for a maximum of 6.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™.

  Psychologists: This course is approved for 6.0 (Intermediate level) Continuing Education (CE) Credits for Psychologists are provided through the co-sponsorship of the American Psychological Association (APA) Office of Continuing Education in Psychology (CEP). The APA CEP Office maintains responsibility for the content of the programs.

Social Workers (The New Jersey Board of Social Work Examiners):  This program is approved for social work continuing education hours by Rutgers University Behavioral Health Care in accordance with New Jersey administrative code 13:44G-6.4 and recognized by The New Jersey Board of Social Work Examiners. This program is approved for 6.0 clinical continuing education hours.
